Title: Summer of Judgement: The Watergate Hearings : Part 1 of 2

Abstract:Special program looking at the Watergate scandal that started in 1972 after Nixon was reelected for his second term in office. A break- in at the Democratic National Committee campaign headquarters had occurred and the burglars turned out to have White House connections and to be on a spying mission. The effort used to cover up these connections became a conspiracy in the White House to obstruct justice and hold the president above the law. When the truth came out, President Nixon resigned. Two of his closest and principal advisors as well as the nation's former Attorney General were brought before the Senate Select Committee. This scandal was more importantly about the constitutional separation of powers, protection of individual rights and the function of a free press. The Watergate drama was a humongous, historic affair of our nation's past and still haunts some Americans today.
