First of a four part series re: political, economic, and social reforms taking place in the USSR with Hedrick Smith (PBS); this broadcast examines national and local political reforms, and includes excerpts of statements by or interviews with Moscow Communist Party Chief Yuri Prokovyev, Boris Kagarlitsky of the Moscow Popular Front, Mikhail Gorbachev, Andrei Sakharov, People's Deputy Boris Yeltsin, People's Deputy Sergei Stankevich, Politburo member Aleksandre Yakovlev, Zdenek Mlynar, historian Roy Medvedev, Communist Party Ideologist Leonid Dobrokhotov, Viktor Postnikov, economist Vladimir Tikhonov, Larisa Kholina, Ivanovo City Soviet Chairman Anatoy Golovkov, Margarita Kholina, Nina Shchedrina, Haik Zoolomian, Sergei Druganov, Brateyevo Communist Party Secretary Yevgeni Pilyayev, Brateyevo Soviet Executive Committee Chairman Nicholai Pavlov, and unidentified others.
