(Studio: John Chancellor) Report on steel plant in Alabama.

(Birmingham, Alabama: Barry Copeland WAPI-TV) Dirty air hovers over city most of the time due to a temperature inversion. US steel ordered to close open hearths in June 1975 but given 1 year to install pollution-free equipment. Furnaces shut down at midnight last night. 300 workers lose jobs. [Worker – cites his opposition to shut down] [Health officer Dr. George Hardy – speaks for clean air.] Hardy says pollution to be reduced by 95% by next year.
