(White House: Brit Hume) President Bush's aims prior to a permanent truce examined. [BUSH - says he wants POWs returned; comments on rebuilding of Iraq, the use of United States forces to police the world, and on the "Vietnam syndrome."] Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney quoted on POW issue.

(Studio: Peter Jennings) Bush reported saying he does not see need for substantial United States forces in the gulf region.

(Pentagon: Bob Zelnick) Regional security arrangements examined: numbers of ground forces, armor, Air Force combat planes, Navy groups and special forces that will remain outlined. Plans for Egypt and Syria to maintain a permanent presence in the gulf under United States coordination noted.
