(Studio) Twenty-three industry plants in Alabama ordered closed by Environmental Protection Agency due to 1970 clean air act. Action due to failure of United States Steel to cut down on emissions.

(Birmingham, Alabama) Orders came after pollution index topped federal warning level. [MAN - says when pollution quits, money does.] [Cnty. Health Representative Dr. George HARDY, Junior - says doesn't want to count deaths before doing anything about it.] Hardy accuses some plants of not responding to voluntary appeals. Companies say they did what they could. [EPA John C. WHITE - says industry may cooperate more when asked to make voluntary reductions now.] Precedent set.
