(White House: Brit Hume) Announcement by President Clinton's Secretary of Defense-designate Bobby Inman that he is withdrawing because of the "new McCarthyism" featured. [In press conference, INMAN - says Senator Robert Dole and "New York Times" columnist William Safire plotted against him.] [December 19, 1993, SAFIRE - says Inman would be the worst appointment.] [DOLE - responds.]
