(Studio) More than 70 miners trapped in soft coal mine in West Virginia. Explosions and fires started 12 hrs. ago.
REPORTER: Walter Cronkite
(Farmington, West Virginia) Fire shown. Rptd. no chance to get men out. 21 got out of new shaft. Vice President Mountaineer Coal Company, William Poundstone, says ways out if men can find them. Fires too intense for rescue attempts. Mine representative James McCartney tells which areas of mine men were working. Families wait nearby. Some lost others in explosion in same mine 16 years ago; 15 killed then. McCartney says gas or coal dust blew up mine.
