(Studio) 1st intercollegiate, transcontinental car race begins between Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Cal. Tech.

(Pasadena, California) Cal. Tech's entry is 10 year old VW. 20 horsepower motor and cruises at 50 m.p.h. Batteries reliable. Elec. companies set up free charging stations along way. Portable generator brought just in case. Car 1,000 pounds lighter than MIT's car. Car begins trip. Car hopes to reach Massachusetts in 3 days.

(Cambridge, Massachusetts) Massachusetts Institute of Technology has 1968 Chevrolet Corvair; car can go 80-100 mile before recharging necessary. [Project Coordinator Leon LOEB - says we'll pass each other enroute& agreed to stop and have talk. We hope meeting is in Flagstaff, Arizona. Hope it'll take not less than 3 1/2 days and no more than wk.] Last week, Massachusetts Institute of Technology car blew fuse. [STUDENT - explains what went wrong and fixes it.] Both cars start at same time.
