(Convention Hall) Report on scheduled showdown with regard to Vietnam plank.
REPORTER: Walter Cronkite

(Convention Hall) Representative Hale Boggs to present platform to convention Fight over Vietnam plank expected. McCarthy, McGovern and Kennedy forces are fighting for their minority resolution; stop bombing, broaden base of South Vietnam government, and get troops out of Vietnam. Say no compromise possible with major plank. [McCarthy Aide Richard GOODWIN - says major plank undoubtedly written in DC. Reflects testimony of Secretary of State Dean Rusk.] Rptd. Boggs did toughen Humphrey's proposal, making halt conditional on Hanoi response and at no risk to American troops. No chance of compromise.
