(Studio) Republican President nominee, Richard Nixon announces running-mate.

(Miami Beach, Florida) [NIXON - recommends to convention that Vice President nominee be MD Governor Spiro T. Agnew.]

(Studio) No one more surprised than Agnew. Agnew son of Greek immigrant who changed his name. Born in Baltimore, served in World War II; earned law degree after war, and began rise in politics. He delivered 18 of 26 1st ballot votes to Nixon.

(Miami Beach, Florida) [AGNEW - says stunned by nomination. Welcomes chance to be point of team to put American on new level of progress. Says Nixon selected him for his knowledge of city, county and state problems. Is pro-civil rights. No civil rights realistically achieved without restoration of order and stopping condonement of civil disobedience. Has good record in civil rights. Hopes Vietnam war can be brought to end at earliest possible moment. Has son in Vietnam. Yearning for peace and attempts to rationalize Communist position not answer. Agnew not household name. Doesn't know what political strength he brings to campaign.]

(Studio) Reporter Bill Plante says Agnew chosen in interest of party unity. His urban orientation fits into central political position of Nixon. Nixon supporters only believe middle-of-road ticket can win. Plante reports attention focused on Agnew at 5 a.m. rather than midday.
