(Studio) Senator begins unprecedented filibuster against nomination of Abe Fortas as Supreme Court Chief Justice.
REPORTER: Walter Cronkite

(DC) Senator Mike Mansfield opens debate by dismissing all charges except fee paid to Fortas for college lectures. Ex-bus. associates of Fortas got fee together. [Senator Philip HART - says let's live with life as it is. Main issue is whether he's qualified and he is.] [Senator Robert GRIFFIN - says next President will nominate some 1 who isn't subject to these charges. It'll be sad day if we lose.] Mansfield says he'll stay with nomination until something done.
