(Studio) Charles Evers defeats incumbent R. J. Allen for mayor of Fayette.
REPORTER: Walter Cronkite
(Fayette, Mississippi) 1st black mayor of South town since Reconstruction. [EVERS - tells whites we won't abuse you like you abused us. Will show what love and togetherness can do.] [Ex-Mayor R. J. ALLEN - says no ill-will and will support new administration] [Nancy VAUGHAN - indicates town has had as many killings as Evers says on TV. He'll make a nice mayor for Fayette.] [Newspaper Editor Marie WALKER - says some whites will resent him, but others will wait to see what he can do.]
