(Studio) Former leader in Democrat presidential race, Senator Edmund Muskie, withdraws from rest of primaries. Defeats have cost him financial backing.
REPORTER: Howard K. Smith
(DC) [MUSKIE - although unable to campaign further, does not withdraw candidacy. Muskie campaigned too hard and long against Nixon while real opponents were Humphrey and McGovern. Other errors in his strategy reviewed: emotional reaction to New Hampshire publisher, criticism of space shuttle in Florida, backing of busing in Florida, honest but foolish remarks about black running mate and about Wallace. He may have things to regret, but nothing to be ashamed of.
