(Studio) Senator Thomas Dodd's committee holds hearing on gun control.
REPORTER: Harry Reasoner
(DC) Majority Leader Mike Mansfield proposes law that imposes mandatory sentence on anyone using or carrying firearm while committing felony. [MANSFIELD - cites 1-10 years for 1st offender. Mandatory 25 years for 2nd offense. Severe penalty would protect society.] [Senator Joseph TYDINGS - says most gun crimes have stiffer penalties than non-gun crimes. It's not effective deterrent; licensing would help.] Dodd's bill closer to Tydings' version. Proposes statewide gun control, but federal certification if that doesn't work. National Rifle Association testifies tomorrow.
