(DC) AFL-CIO President George Meany remains neutral, but labor leaders from 35 states and 29 unions meet to back McGovern; pledge $250,000 to his campaign. [McGOVERN - rebuffs criticism of his youthful long-haired supporters; notes former President Johnson's long hair. Accuses Nixon of using scare tactics.] McGovern thinks Republican convention reminded wavering Democrats what Nixon-Agnew team could mean to nation if reelected.
