(Studio) Senator begins confirmation hearing on nomination L. Patrick Gray to head FBI. Many feel Gray too political for job.
REPORTER: Walter Cronkite
(DC) Democrats feel Gray partisan political and that under Gray FBI lax in investigating Watergate bugging. Gray offers to make FBI files on Watergate available to Senator Eastland or any other Senator Denies to Senator Birch Bayh that he intended to help Nixon campaign with his speeches. [Senator Robert BYRD - says feels Gray too political active for nonpartisan office.]
