(Studio) Confrontation between White House and House Judiciary Committee over impeachment probe may be avoided.
REPORTER: Walter Cronkite

(White House) President hints at compromise, possibly involving independent 3rd party who will choose evidence for Judiciary Committee relevant to its probe. Similar offer made to former prosecutor Archibald Cox and Senate Watergate committee Senator Norris Cotton says President discussed such a compromise privately.

(DC) [Judiciary Committee chairperson Peter RODINO - doesn't think 3rd party makes sense. [Representative Edward HUTCHINSON - hopes 3rd party won't be interjected.] [Representative RODINO - thinks subpoena will be issued if White House refuses to recognize committee 's authority.] [HUTCHINSON - hopes confrontation will be avoided.] Enforcement appears to be problem if subpoena issued.
