REPORTER: Roger Mudd

(DC) [August 15, 1973, PRES. - says he launched program on March 21, `73 to get facts.] President' basic Watergate defense reviewed. Yesterday's admission of withholding evidence blows defense wide open. June 23 conversation compared with later presidential statements of August 15, `73, November 27, `73. CBS learns President' attorney James Saint Clair threatened to resign unless Nixon released transcript and stated Saint Clair had no knowledge of untruths. This reporter refers to President' own book "Six Crises"; details given.
