REPORTER: Walter Cronkite
(California) In 1845, Portuguese sailor named Antone Joseph began new life in San Francisco, California. Left his descendants with medical legacy of disease and death. Disease called Joseph's disease and confined to his 150 descendants. Always leads to death. [Rosemary SILVA - says disease was family secret up until 4-5 years ago.] Silva took secret to National Genetics Foundation. Family assembled and illness diagnosed. [Med. geneticist Dr. William NYHAN - describes symptoms as appearing drunk.] Doctors feel it's caused by defective gene. Disease strikes 1 of every 2 family mbrs. [Doris NUSBAUM - describes her life while ill.] [Rick DONOHUE - says quite a shock to find out he had it. Will let his future wife know everything about illness.]
