(DC) State Department reports number of Vietnam evacuees estimated at 80,000; 32,000 of these picked up offshore. [Defense Secretary James SCHLESINGER - says if anyone able to reach American ships in open sea, they'll be picked up; most ships withdrawing.] Schlesinger doesn't deny letter sent to South Vietnam ambassador Graham Martin expressing irritation with delays in helicopter evacuation. [SCHLESINGER - explains reasons for some delays in evacuation plans.]
