(Rhode Island) Roger Williams called this city Providence. 150 years before US Const., he decreed all men should walk as their consciences persuade them. [Brown University professor William McLAUGHLIN - says religious diversity of Rhode Island caused it to be considered scandal and disgrace. Place known as "Rogue's Island" Other states considered it example of popular democracy's going too far.] Oldest synagogue in American here. The 1st Baptist Church here. Religious liberty began here. First state to be free.
