(DC) Republicans have not fared too well since Mrs. Smith became chairperson; details given. [Mrs. SMITH - says her critics don't have enough votes to get her removed from post.] Mrs. Smith retiring for personal reasons. [Mrs. SMITH - doesn't think Republican party's future in far right or far left but in moderate approach.] White House spokesperson says President Ford considers himself to be head of Republican party and expects to have a say in Mrs. Smith's successor.
