(DC) Ex-US ambassador to Saudi Arabia, James Akins, says Saudis didn't get Iran to join price rollback. [Subcommittee cnsl. Jerome LEVINSON - asked if Akins was told to quit pushing for oil rollback ] [AKINS - yes.] [LEVINSON - asks if Akins' pressure on subject irritated the Secretary of State.] [AKINS - says he was told that.] Akins says Saudi Arabia baffled by US reluctance to press price issue. State Department preparing response.
