REPORTER: Roger Mudd
(Selukwe, Rhodesia) Rhodesia has highest quality chrome in non-Communist world and United States would rather buy from Rhodesia than Russia. Congress amendment named after Virginia's Harry Byrd exempts strategic minerals such as chrome from United Nations sanctions on trade with Rhodesia. Sale of this mineral keeps white government in power in Rhodesia. Part of Rhodesia political problems can be seen in operation of chrome mine owned by American firm, Union Carbide. Reporter cites statistics relating to black/white workers in mines. [Operations leader Rhodesia Chrome Mines Geoffrey BLORE - says there is imbalance in education between blacks and whites; that 95% of taxpayers are white and are paying for growth of black education, which Rhodesians believe is growing faster than in any other African nation] Reporter cites government policies with regard to black children's education. Most of people dependent on the mines cannot vote. Voting laws noted. Company paternalism noted.
