(Studio) Republican ticket picks up Jimmy Carter statement with regard to tax reform and is attacking this issue.

(DC) Ford aides say Carter has given them exploitable campaign issue. Today Ford invites former NEA (National Education Association) president to visit; NEA (National Education Association) recently endorsed Carter, but former official says teachers may not have known that, according to Carter's plan, teachers' taxes would go up. [Past president of NEA James HARRIS - says Carter plan would include many teachers and Carter didn't announce plan until after NEA (National Education Association) endorsement.] President speaks to group of farmers at White House with regard to new issue. [FORD - says tax relief should be given and his administration will give it]. I Ford strategists idea of importance of this issue noted.

(Fort Lauderdale, Florida) Senator Robert Dole speaks to Chamber of Commerce audience in Orlando, Florida; brings up Carter statements with regard to medium income level for higher taxes. [DOLE - comments on what he sees as implications in Carter statements.] At Fort Lauderdale, Dole conts. to portray Carter as trying to get out of tax proposal. [DOLE - says in Associated Press interview Carter said it, no matter what he says now.] Dole sees tax question as way to put Carter on defensive.

(Lewiston, ME) Senator Walter Mondale goes North to campaign and has to defend Carter's tax reform proposal. At textile factory appearance in Lewiston, ME, Mondale comments on tax issue, tries to get Democrats off defensive and throw issue back to Republicans [MONDALE - says Republican trying to twist statement to protect selves from own tax reform record.] Mondale comments on Dole's resistance in Senate to tax reform bills and support of tax shelters for rich.
