(Studio) President reduces sentence of Watergate figure G. Gordon Liddy; can now get parole in July.
REPORTER: Walter Cronkite
(DC) Carter's action said to be in interest of fairness and equity, compared to sentences of John Mitchell, John Dean, Charles Colson and Richard Nixon's top aide H.R. Haldeman. Liddy in Pennsylvania's Allenwood Prison and refuses to speak of Watergate participation. Fine is still in effect, but Liddy has filed pauper's oath, so may not have to pay it.
