(Studio) Appointment of Peter Jay as Britain's ambassador to United States creates controversy in London.
REPORTER: Walter Cronkite

(London, England) (Film of television show "Weekend World", with Jay on it, shown.) Jay is television personality and economy editor of London "Times" and is married to former Margaret Callaghan. 2 met at Oxford; Jay's background and work of both in Washington, DC noted. Uproar in nation and in Parliament cited. [Labor MP Neil KINNOCK - notes that British tradition holds patronage, if even given, must be subtle.] [JAY - would have had doubts with regard to accepting position if he hadn't known nomination came from Secretary David Owen.] Parliament can't do anything about appointment, but one member now drafts legislature to curb prime minister's powers in appointments.
