(Studio) President Carter takes cruise in nuclear submarine.
REPORTER: Roger Mudd

(Port [sic] Canaveral, Florida) Carter's own Navy experiences with regard to subs noted. [CARTER - cites effect Admiral Hyman Rickover had on his life.] Details of cruise noted. Mrs. Carter is also aboard. [RICKOVER - describes speed of conventional subs and that of nuclear ones; Harry Truman was one who decided actual speed of nuclear sub couldn't be revealed, but certain details with regard to speed could be.] (US Navy film of President's action on cruise shown.) During cruise "Los Angeles" simulates torpedo attacks on destroyer. President returns to port in late afternoon. [CARTER - says there's no finer ship in world.]

(Studio) Navy confirms at least 5 overweight sailors are excused from "Los Angeles" duty during Carter visit.
