(Studio) President Carter's Christianity has focused attention on grassroots religion in US. Following is report on movement encompassing people from various faiths, united by devotion to Holy Spirit. Group is called Charismatics and holds rally in Kansas City, Missouri.
REPORTER: Roger Mudd

(Kansas City, Missouri) Report on rally, movement and its members President's sister, Ruth Carter Stapleton, is member [Kevin RANAGHAN - cites beliefs of Charismatics.] Mvt. beginning in 1901 has roots in Bible, but was mostly underground until last IS years Pope Paul VI blessed Catholic Charismatics in Rome in 1975. Some practices still confuse uninitiated, especially that of speaking in tongues. [RANAGHAN - talks of own experience of speaking in tongues.] Ldrs. play down such experiences to keep from alienating Christians finding them incompatible to beliefs.
