(Ocean Beach, Fire Island, New York) Eating in public violates law in Ocean Beach, New York. [Baker Rachel DORING - feels no remorse for contributing to "negligent eating," through her sale of cookies.] [Street sweeper Charles LIEBRECHT - believes legalizing cookies contributes to littering.] Ocean Beach is popular resort, and town attempts to keep it clean and orderly. [Board of trustees Warner DANBY - considers homeowners, who pay the taxes of Ocean Beach.] Cookie eaters approach ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) and threaten to fight Chocolate Chip Law. [ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) Linda MARGOLIN - explains reasoning behind protest.] Lawsuit over the law described. Judge Benjamin Mehlin presides. Defense Attorney Michael Hills says charges against those arrested are unconstitutional. Case postponed. [HILLS- laughs, but won't joke, about issue.] Attorney Arthur Hammer, representative of village homeowners, is concerned with regard to controversy. [HAMMER - thinks matter exaggerated.] Situation summarized.
