(Studio) Defense Department drops misconduct charges against 7 former POWs.
REPORTER: Harry Reasoner
(Pentagon) Forgive and forget policy seems to apply in charges against POWs. All charges dropped against Chenoweth, Daly, Rayford, Young, Branch, Riate, Elbert, Kavanaugh. Abel Kavanaugh allegedly took own life and all but 1 charged prisoners of war served as honorary pallbearers. Army and Navy say insufficient evidence to press charges. Army Secretary Calloway says men tortured by North Vietnam and before that event, men served American admirably.
