(Studio) Cyrus Vance reported resigning as Secretary of State today in protest of President Carter's decision for recent rescue attempt in Iran.
REPORTER: Dan Rather

(DC) Vance noted 1st Secretary of State in recent United States history to clash publicly over matter of principle with president and then leave. Vance's letter of resignation to Carter and Carter's reply quoted in part on screen; Vance's alleged sentiments on rescue effort outlined. [VANCE - says he couldn't support President's decision for operation.] Possibility that Vance was victim of high-level sandbagging job at White House examined; meeting of national sec. council with regard to Iran rescue operation and presence of deputy Secretary of State Warren Christopher noted. Details given; possible replacement of Vance with Christopher, Sol Linowitz or Lloyd Cutler considered. Vance's alleged position outlined; Vietnam mentioned.
