(Studio) Southern Christian Leadership Conference President Reverend Ralph Abernathy resigns because of organization's financial problems. Abernathy replaced Dr. Martin Luther King after King's assassination.
REPORTER: Howard K. Smith

(Atlanta, Georgia) April, 1968, film shows Abernathy accepting Southern Christian Leadership Conference leadership [ABERNATHY - says hopes to be troublemaker as King was.] Today, Abernathy cites money problems as reason for resignation and criticizes blacks for not supporting Southern Christian Leadership Conference and King's plans. Reporter asks if Abernathy refers to Mrs. King. [ABERNATHY - states wouldn't say anything against Mrs. King. But if King's ideas and ideals to be carried out, donations must be made through SCLC.] After news conference Abernathy goes to King's grave. [ABERNATHY - says he tried to keep team together. Asks King to forgive him for resigning.]
