(Studio) Former FBI acting director Patrick Gray and CIA deputy director Vernon Walters appear before Senate Watergate committee
REPORTER: Howard K. Smith

(Capitol Hill) Gray says FBI conducted full Watergate probe except in beginning when former White House cnsl. John Dean suggested CIA involvement in Mexico might be uncovered with full FBI probe. CIA's Vernon Walters says no problems existed in Mexico with regard to CIA and Walters told Dean. Finally Walters and Gray met. Gray called Clark MacGregor and told him to inform President about run-around in FBI probe of Watergate. Later President called Gray. [GRAY - discloses conversation he had with President Told him about White House staff confusing Watergate issue purposely. President told Gray to continue thorough investigation of Watergate affair.] Walters recalls more details from Gray's conversation with President [WALTERS - says Gray told Walters about conversation. Gray recommended getting rid of all involved in White House conspiracy to stop FBI Watergate probe.] [Senator Herman TALMADGE - asks if President knew about White House staff involvement in cover-up in July, `72, from FBI's Gray and CIA's Walters.] Walters agrees with statement. [GRAY - insists that he didn't tell President Watergate case couldn't be covered up. Has no recollection of advising President to get rid of high White House involvement in Watergate.] Gray disputes Walters' version of what Gray told him. Gray discusses Hunt papers incident. [GRAY - says he met with John Dean and John Ehrlichman on Hunt files. Admits Ehrlichman and Dean didn't expressly order destruction of files, but has no doubt that destruction was their intention. Burned Hunt files Christmas week] Gray admits perjuring himself earlier in year on Hunt papers, but Ehrlichman lied about calls to Gray with President present. [GRAY - says received call from Ehrlichman with regard to Dean talking with prosecutors with regard to Hunt files.] Gray insists he didn't tell Ehrlichman he would deny destroying files as Ehrlichman testified.
