(Studio) White House reported mounting rescue operation for Secretary of State Alexander Haig.
REPORTER: Bob Schieffer

(DC) White House reported coming to aid of Haig in his efforts to get regional assistants confirmed by Senator [Aide Edwin MEESE - wants to know why there's a holdup.] Current activities of Haig's assistants Lawrence Eagleburger, Chester Crocker mentioned; Senator delay said engineered by Senator Jesse Helms. Details outlined on screen, discussed; Helms said remaining opposed to Crocker, John Holdridge, and Thomas Enders. Possible morale problems at State Department and possibility that Reagan is attempting to ease Haig out considered.
