(Studio) Purge of Environmental Protection Agency administration officials inspector general Matthew Novick and administration director John Horton reported; possible further firings noted.

(DC) Testimony before Congress committee today of former assistant Environmental Protection Agency administration Rita Lavelle examined. [LAVELLE - denies wrongdoing.] Lavelle said denying allegations of misuse of Environmental Protection Agency toxic waste cleanup superfund; administration Anne Burford reported not notifying Justice Department of Lavelle's alleged association with defense in dumping case and possible conflict of interest as well as House perjury investigation; details outlined on screen. [Representative John CHAFEE - questions Lavelle's association with industry polluters.] [LAVELLE - defs. actions; claims Burford withheld cleanup funds in California to punish Jerry Brown politically.] [BURFORD - defs. withholding California award.] [LAVELLE - recalls Burford's terminology when firing her.] Admin. said planning to kill EPA's long-range exploratory research program; that program recalled discovering threat posed by acid rain.
