(Studio) Report on firing of Defense Secretary James Schlesinger and CIA Director William Colby.
REPORTER: Harry Reasoner

(DC) Schlesinger and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger had lot in common, but not how to run foreign policy. They disagree on: detente; Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) and Sinai agreement. Schlesinger outgunned by Kissinger in the executive branch. Kissinger's loss of job as chairperson National Security Council to his deputy, Lieutenant General Brent Scowcroft, not that great. Scowcroft thinks like Kissinger on for. policy, but Kissinger's access to Ford could be reduced. Don. Rumsfeld neither military or foreign affairs expert, but he's shrewder political and close Ford friend. George Bush, head of United States liaison office in Peking, to replace William Colby. Colby considered too talkative and not supportive enough of Kissinger. Kissinger still powerful but little less so.

(Studio) Ford refused to discuss shake-up while in Florida, although information leaked.

(DC) 1 week ago, Ford told Kissinger and Rumsfeld of his plan for shake-up. He was to announce move on Saturday, but learned of news leaks Friday and Saturday He fired both Colby and Schlesinger on Sunday Both offered administration jobs. Colby dismissed so Ford can have fresh start with CIA. Schlesinger dismissed because Ford didn't feel comfortable with him or share his views. Ford tells staff he made decisions.
