(Studio) Attorney General Edward Levi makes proposal with regard to gun control to Senate subcommittee
REPORTER: Howard K. Smith

(DC) Levi proposes total ban on cheap handguns; required waiting period for purchaser in which local police could check purchaser out and improve enforcement in 10 largest cities. [LEVI - says injuries received from handgun possession 4 times greater than protection given when crime tried.] Senator Birch Bayh proposes ban on all handguns. Senator Edward Kennedy proposes registering and licensing all owners. Gun lobby opposes ban; Levi has hard time trying to find Republican sponsor.
