(Studio) New farm law guarantees right of collective bargaining for field workers.
REPORTER: Harry Reasoner

(San Joaquin, California) Harvesting time here. United Farm Workers (UFW) rally held. President Cesar Chavez's activism helped create new law. Farm workers not covered by national labor relations act. They can demand state supervised secret ballot elections to choose union or no union. They've lost 300 contracts to Teamsters in 5 years Chavez predicts his union to win 90% of election. [CHAVEZ - says growers brought Teamsters in. ] [Teamster representative Ralph COTNER - says we're concentrating on surfacing mbrship. in field.] Elections to be held after workers' petitions filed. Controversy over whether union organizers will be allowed access to field. [Grower Jim LAWRENCE - says workers to decide union and we'll negotiate with union.] Law could serve as national model.
