(Studio) More than 5,000 West Virginia miners on strike to force legislature to act on bill giving compensation to miners with black lung disease.
REPORTER: Frank Reynolds

(West Virginia) Lime spread on walls and floors of mines is 1 method of abating spread of black lung. Another method is spraying water on coal. Methods supposed to be used in all mines, but aren't. [Miner Monroe CANTERBURY - says dust very thick. Can spit up dust outside mine.] [West Virginia Coal Association David JOHNSON - knows of no state or country where lung impairment presumed to be occupational in origin without medical evidence it is.] [Dr. Hawey WELLS - says between ages 60-64, 800 times as many miners die of lung disease than gin. population] Little progress in fighting black lung.
