(Studio) Gary Gilmore's girlfriend, Nicole Barrett, says Monday, after visit with Gilmore, that they're engaged; Gilmore due to go before Utah board of pardons in plea for death sentence on Wednesday; today both attempt suicide.
REPORTER: Barbara Walters
(UT State Prison) Gilmore's unconscious body found on floor of cell during routine check. [Med. technician Tom ONGOAY - describes Gilmore's condition when found; says it's not known type of drug he used.] Later is found drug is sleeping agent Seconal; warden Sam Smith cites 3 possibilities as to how Gilmore got drug. [SMITH - says drug could have been saved from Gilmore's own medication or gotten from other inmates or visitors.] In Springville, UT, Nicole Barrett also attempts suicide. [Springville police chief Leland BOWERS - notes Barrett found on couch with picture of Gilmore.] Barrett in critical condition in Provo, UT, hospital. Last week she talked with reporter Jack Ford with regard to Gilmore. [BARRETT - says Gilmore wants to do what he feels is right and feels he should be executed; says part of it is his desire not to spend next 10 years in prison.] Future of both Gilmore and Barrett uncertain.

(Portland, OR) [Bruce ADAMS - says Gilmore was a loner.] Background on Adams relationship with Gilmore noted. [ADAMS - talks with regard to Gilmore's art work.] Adams says he's sorry for Gilmore, not murderer but potential artist and he's not surprised Gilmore chose death. [ADAMS - says he thinks Gilmore got tired of going from 1 prison to another.]
