(DC) Front-runner believed to be Cal Tech president Harold Brown, who was Air Force Secretary under Lyndon Johnson. Opposition to Brown comes from AFL-CIO president George Meany and hawks in Congress; Rowland Evans, Junior and Robert Novack's column's writings with regard to Brown's actions with regard to Vietnam war and USSR noted. These 2 forces favor James Schlesinger, who's opposed by congress liberals and is also considered by USSR as leading opponent of detente. Effect of defense post on national security cluster noted.
