(Studio) Ronald Reagan campaigns in Illinois.
REPORTER: Howard K. Smith

(Belleville, Illinois) Reagan tells Illinois voters he's more electable than Ford. [REAGAN - says doesn't want to go into November battle with Democrats having to defense part of the past (Watergate).] Reagan trying to remind voters that Ford is President only because of Watergate. Reagan asked if Ford had to apologize for anything with regard to Watergate.] [REAGAN - says Ford has nothing to apologize for. Democrats will try to keep Watergate alive.] Reagan remained defender of Nixon almost to the end. Illinois conservatives may not be grateful to Reagan for reminding them of it.

(Studio) Reagan dropped all reference to Watergate in another speech. He said reporters read something in his earlier remarks that he didn't intend.
