(Studio) Defense Secretary Don. Rumsfeld takes test flight in B-1 bomber.
REPORTER: Harry Reasoner
(Edwards AFB, California) B-1 is in 2nd year of air flight testing. [RUMSFELD - says B-1 is important part of United States maintenance of strategic nuclear balance.] Some critics say B-1 will cost $11 billion more than estimated. In 1974, 44% said there was too much defense spending, according to Gallup poll; 36% in 1976 feel that way. House Armed Services Committee okays $1.5 billion to build 3 B-1 bombers. Air Force wants 244 to replace B-52 bombers. Rumsfeld praises B-1's performance.
