(Studio) Platform committee finishes final report today
REPORTER: Harry Reasoner

(Kansas City) Planks discussed with regard to foreign political issues. Panama Canal plank debated; Reagan supporter said it wasn't strong enough. Ford supporter Senator Roman Hruska defends plank as written. [HRUSKA - reads from document and says section is all-inclusive.] [John EAST - gives his interpretation of proposed amendment.] [Jim THOMPSON - says it's time country told others hands off and means it.] [David TREEN - says Ford, Reagan and Stassen can all run with plank as written.] Amendment proposal not passed. Platform committee relatively quiet Ford-Reagan battleground. Though some issues may be debated on convention floor, neither side apparently lost or gained many from platform planks.

(Studio) ERA support caused trouble in platform committee Conservative movement tried to deny support in platform.

(Kansas City) Platform committee argues over endorsement of amendment after subcommittee recommended party take no position on it. [Ford delegate Representative Millicent FENWICK - says it's extraordinary that they're debating whether women are equal citizens.] [Reagan delegate Frances WIDEMAN - says American women have preferential treatment and ERA would be step down.] Committee decides in favor of endorsement. Controversy surrounding ERA in Republican party and views from both sides noted. Opponents of ERA will take fight to convention floor, but move expected to fail.
