(Studio) United States intends to block application of Vietnam to United Nations membership when Security Council meets Tuesday
REPORTER: Harry Reasoner
(DC) United Nations ambassador William Scranton meets with President Ford; says Ford instructed him to veto Vietnam membership application; is asked why. [SCRANTON - says no negotiations have shown Vietnam interest in alleviating problem of MIA's; US feels this is precedent to admission as example of humanitarianism UN demands.] Vietnam issues statement at United Nations that veto is political ploy in presidential campaign and publishes latest diplomatic note to US; contents noted. Ambassador Scranton says Hanoi took three months to answer last United States note, so United States in no hurry to answer Hanoi.
