(Studio) Govt. authorizes over-the-counter sale of some prescription cold remedies.
REPORTER: Howard K. Smith

(DC) FDA (Food and Drug Administration) says sale of combination cough and cold remedies will continue, though many not effective. Today's action gives cold sufferer more drugs to fight cold; drugs formerly gotten only by prescription. Drug industry targeting specific symptoms. [Acting FDA (Food and Drug Administration) Commissioner Sherwin GARDNER - says it's wasteful and unnecessary for consumer to take cough ingredient when all he has is runny nose. Says some ingredients interfere with each other.] [FDA (Food and Drug Administration) advisory panel chairperson Dr. Francis LOWELL - says no need,for personal welfare, to take any medicine at all. Says old remedies of liquids, bed rest and chicken soup as good as anything.]
