(Studio) At electoral college meeting in December, surprise came as one member voted for Ronald Reagan. Today Senator takes up constitutional amendment re: abolition of electoral college and has another surprise.
REPORTER: Barbara Walters

(DC) Both Democrats and Republicans favor abolition of electoral college and come in pairs to express views: Hubert Humphrey with Robert Dole, Howard Baker with Henry Jackson. Dole makes revelation with regard to last election. [DOLE - says Republicans looked for electoral votes from Ohio, Missouri, Mississippi and Louisiana after election; says Ford and White House staff not involved.] Action means there was legal attempt in 1976 to give president to runner-up in election. Revelation may help bipartisan move to abolish electoral college.
