(Studio) Congress hearings on Indian takeover of BIA begin.
REPORTER: John Chancellor
(DC) Subcommittee aim is to find which government officials responsible for letting Indians occupy and ransack BIA. 1st witnesses are Interior Secretary Rogers Morton, Indian Commissioner Bruce and Assistant Secretary Loesch. No Indian protesters invited to testify. Loesch says intended to have riot police clear building, but was overruled by John Ehrlichman of White House (with Nixon's approval) to avoid violence. [MORTON - says decision made to get Indians out with court order.] [LOESCH - says administration made decision on what to do.] Ehrlichman and other White House people decline to testify.
