(Studio) Federal government required to report on number court-ordered wire taps and other electronic surveillance used.

(DC) Electronic surveillance by Federal agents increased substantially last yr., up 60%. Federal judges were asked to approve 285 hidden devices or 1 ea. working day. 531 requested by local police. No judge turned down a request. Last year 6 of 10 telephone taps were incriminating. Most concerned gambling. FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover reports FBI operates 5 devices for every 1 okayed by-a court, in National Security cases.
